Alumina supported catalysts are used in many conversion reactions of hydrocarbons. They can be used in fixed bed reactors, moving bed reactors or circulating fluidized bed reactors. In all the use of these reaction beds, the attrition of the catalyst is important. During the packing of a fixed catalyst bed, the fragmentation of the catalyst may be quite obvious, while in a moving bed or circulating fluidized bed reactor, the catalyst must be attrition resistant. The shape of the catalyst particles can vary, but in order to obtain a uniformly packed catalyst bed, the catalyst particles are preferably spherical. A convenient method for preparing spherical alumina catalysts is the oil drop method, in which droplets of alumina hydrosol and gelling agent are passed through a hot oil bath. The method of preparing spherical alumina with high density and high crushing strength from alumina hydrate by the oil drop method is disclosed in the U.S. Patent (Patent No. 4,542,113) and the claims filed in the patent. The method includes the use of specific characteristics Alumina sol, and then urea is mixed into the sol. In addition to a high degree of wear resistance of the catalyst, for some specific applications, it is desirable for the catalyst to have a low packing density. The low packing density of the catalyst must mean that the catalyst has more pore structure, which generally leads to an increase in the activity of the catalyst.
